Huawei Cloud has recently received a Class C License from the Communications, Space, and Technology Commission (CST) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, marking the commission's highest certification for Cloud Service Providers (CSPs). The recognition follows a thorough evaluation by the National Cybersecurity Authority (NCA), assessing Huawei Cloud against the Essential Cybersecurity Controls (ECC) and the Cloud Cybersecurity Controls (CCC).

This pivotal license empowers Huawei Cloud to deliver cutting-edge Cloud Services to both public and private sectors across the Kingdom and the wider region. The rigorous criteria for obtaining a Class C License include adherence to the Cloud Cybersecurity Controls (CCC) for the Government Sector, aligning with Class A and Class B standards and requirements, and obtaining necessary approvals in compliance with prevailing laws, regulations, policies, and governance models. Under this license, Huawei Cloud is now authorized to handle government data classifications, encompassing public data, restricted data, secret data, and top-secret data.

This licensing achievement follows the recent launch of the Huawei Cloud Riyadh Region. Aligned with the goals outlined in Huawei Cloud's commitment to significant investments in cloud infrastructure within Saudi Arabia, declared during LEAP 2023, this milestone reinforces Huawei Cloud's dedication to fostering digital-led economic growth and prosperity.

This pivotal step is part of Huawei Cloud's broader strategy, rooted in Saudi Arabia, aligned with the nation's 2030 vision. Huawei Cloud aims to catalyze the digital transformation and intelligent upgrade of Saudi enterprises through cutting-edge technologies, enhanced user experiences, and a collaborative ecosystem.

Huawei Cloud plans to employ cutting-edge technologies such as Cloud Native 2.0, GaussDB, Digital Human, and Pangu Model 3.0 for Government, Electricity and Meteorology services, to boost intelligence in Saudi Arabia. The Pangu 3.0 AI model specifically tackles challenges in AI adoption, using industry knowledge to improve AI capabilities in areas like finance, government, manufacturing, and beyond. The introduction of this model is expected to drive innovation in the Kingdom and expedite economic diversification.

Over the next five years, Huawei aspires to empower 200,000 developers in Saudi Arabia, forge joint solutions with 1,000 local partners, and launch the Huawei Cloud Startup Program, providing support for 2,000 startups. Huawei, UNESCO, and Thai Ministry Drive Green Education

Huawei, UNESCO, and Thailand's Ministry of Education are launching the Green Education Initiative to educate and empower youth and communities on climate action, with a focus on green schools, skills, and communities.

Huawei and UNESCO and Ministry of Education announced their strategic partnership on the Green Education Initiative, which is designed to educate young people and communities nationwide on the importance of climate action and empower them to take action.

The initiative covers three areas:

Huawei, under its TECH4ALL initiative, and UNESCO plan to develop green programs and solutions covering these three areas in partnership with Thailand’s Ministry of Education. Projects include digital power technologies for schools, green energy training for students, and a digital bus to provide training in digital literacy and climate action with a focus on rural and remote areas throughout Thailand.

UNESCO defines ‘greening’ as pursuing the knowledge and practices that are more ecologically responsible and promote the sustainable use of natural resources for current and future generations.

“The SDGs are at a midpoint, and there is still much work that needs to be done. No one can do this alone, including the United Nations,” said Kirimoke Drollett, Chief of Administration of the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok, at the launch event in Nakhon Nayok Province. “It is essential that we take urgent and accelerated action to put the SDGs back on track, and our partnership will speed up the efforts for climate action through green education. UNESCO is proud to support Thailand in greening and securing a bright future for all.”

Thailand has announced a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality roadmap by 2050. To achieve these goals, solar power must be boosted as a crucial energy source. In Thailand, solar power capacity currently stands at 2,633 megawatts and is expected to reach 14,864 megawatts by 2037.

The Green Education Initiative signifies a shared commitment to empower young people, communities, and other stakeholders to take an active role in climate action. The Department of Learning Encouragement (DOLE) under Thailand’s Ministry of Education will support lifelong learning for people of all ages and ensure the initiative reaches communities that need it the most.

Mr Chaipat Panwatanasakul (Ed.D.), Expert on Curriculum Development and Division Director of Strategy and Planning, DOLE, said: “I am delighted and proud to work together with UNESCO and Huawei Thailand to drive forward Green Education and Schools in Thailand. This initiative will help enable more digital inclusiveness for youth and the public in every corner of Thailand by utilising the digital bus to enhance education on technology, improve our quality of life, and tackle global warming. In addition to enabling more digital skills, Huawei and UNESCO also want to emphasise the issue of global warming by including knowledge sharing on water security, clean energy, biomass production, and waste management. I would like to thank Huawei again for providing this initial opportunity to the Department of Learning Encouragement, Ban Na, Nakhon Nayok."

Huawei will leverage its technological expertise in digital and green solutions to support the initiative.

“In Thailand’s journey toward a digitally connected and low-carbon future, Huawei is committed to enabling an inclusive and sustainable digital Thailand in the past 24 years. Huawei has already installed a total of more than 5 GW inverters in Thailand’s households and industries. In this green education project, Huawei will devote our technological innovation in digital power solutions and capacity-building experience in green energy training. With UNESCO, the Ministry of Education, and partners, we aim to support Thailand’s Carbon Neutrality roadmap and cultivation of local green energy engineers,” said Benjamin Liu, Director of Human Resources Department, Huawei Technologies (Thailand) Co., Ltd.

More than 150 people, including UNESCO Bangkok, local officials, partners, teachers and students, and community members, attended the launch event in Thailand.

IEC inks strategic partnership deal with Huawei

INNOVATIVE Energy Company (IEC) Limited (formerly IEC SPEI Limited) has inked a partnership deal with Chinese technology company Huawei that will see both companies collaborating on the implementation of several solar energy projects with battery energy storage systems in Jamaica.

The deal forms part of IEC's strategy to expand its renewable energy projects using the company's expertise in the field and will provide the vertically integrated energy company with unique access to competitive prices and technical support.

Signed in the People's Republic of China in May 2023, the strategic partnership agreement was "consummated" just weeks before Christmas, IEC founder and Executive Chairman Nigel Davy informed Jamaica Observer.

"Huawei is among the fastest-growing digital power systems manufacturers and also they are a tier one manufacturer, as deemed by Bloomberg, so partnering with a company like Huawei will, of course, enhance our standing in the business that we're in. Two, we'll get preferential prices from them; and three, they'll also give us access to special pricing and training for our engineers to service their equipment in the region," he explained.

So far, IEC and Huawei have outlined three major solar installation projects that are underway — two at the island's international airports and the other with the Ministry of Agriculture through National Irrigation Commission.

"IEC continues its collaborative efforts with technology companies such as Huawei to offer the latest innovations that drive green energy transformation. We are excited to be in a position to help Jamaica achieve its 2037 green energy vision and equally excited to be working with Wigton and our major clients such as MBJ Airports Limited, PAC Kingston Airport Limited, and the National Irrigation Commission," a release from the company quotes Davy.

Work at National Irrigation Commission will begin in three months, and a budget of $1.4 billion has been set aside for the completion of that project. Another $1.6 billion has been earmarked for the phase two implementation of solar systems at Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, which is slated for completion in about a year, and $1.2 allocated to Montego Bay's Sangster International Airport.

In the meantime, both Huawei and IEC are pursuing other opportunities as they seek to build out a portfolio of projects. In fact, both are now collaborating on a bid in response to a request for proposal for 100 megawatts of renewable energy issued by the Generation Procurement Entity, which is responsible for leading and managing the implementation and replacement of baseload generation in keeping with the Integrated Resource Plan of the Government of Jamaica.

"We continue to work with other private sector companies [but] we can't disclose those yet because they have not officially awarded us the projects, except [to say] that we are in advanced stages of negotiations," Davy told Business Observer, adding that one is a telecommunications services provider.

With regard to the training component of the partnership agreement, Davy said it augurs well for the enhancement of the skill set of local engineers. To that end, IEC will leverage the partnership by "factory" training its engineers to provide local technical support and wil market Huawei Digital Power's commercial and industrial products to third parties in Jamaica and the region.

The executive chairman revealed further that it will be using tertiary and vocational training institutions as the platforms to facilitate the knowledge transfer, but "primarily" the facilities at University of Technology, Jamaica.

Huawei's president of digital power – LATAM and Caribbean, Felix Chen said the technology company is delighted to have IEC as a strategic partner and looks forward to deepening its relationship with the Jamaican entity over the years to come.

According to IEC's website the company has developed, financed, constructed and operated over 20 energy projects in the United States, Central America and Jamaica, with a total capital cost of over US$800 million. Its main focus is on reducing the energy costs of its industrial, commercial, and residential customers through the execution of renewable energy projects such as solar, liquefied natural gas, and wind power.
